A Letter From Fikret, Founder of Social Friday

We believe that all change starts with a single idea. Ours began with transforming unproductive Friday afternoons into moments of impact.

Letter from the Founder – Reinventing Fridays for Connection and Well-Being

The Question That Started It All

When I started Social Friday in 2017, I was not planning a global movement. I asked myself something simple: How can we make the least productive time more meaningful, for my company and for society?

Habits Shape Who We Are

Habits shape our lives. What we repeat becomes who we are. That is why Social Friday was never meant as a one-time idea. It was born as a ritual. A habit of doing good.

Doing Good Transforms Everyone

Doing good is not just about giving to others. It is also a gift to yourself. It strengthens your mental health, nourishes your soul, and reminds you of what truly matters. In the end, the line between giver and receiver blurs. Everyone is transformed.

From Inspiration to an Ecosystem

That question—How can doing good become a habit, a lifestyle?—still drives me. Not just how to inspire people once, but how to make doing good stick. How to make it part of our identity. How to build an ecosystem that keeps it alive and growing.

Rethinking Volunteering

To achieve this, we have to challenge outdated views of volunteering. Forget the clichés of obligation or pity. Doing good should feel dynamic. Like a mental workout. A way to energize your well-being while creating real impact.

The Mental Health Challenge

Mental health has become one of the biggest challenges of our time. More free time alone will not fix it. Without purpose, free time often leads to more consumption. More screens, more distractions, more things we do not need. That path empties us. Connection fills us.

Why Belonging Matters

Human beings need belonging. Covid showed us this truth with force. Yet offline interactions keep declining. Our sense of community is shrinking. Misunderstanding and division are growing. Without connection, society weakens.

Social Friday as the Alternative

Social Friday offers a bold alternative. We take the least productive hours of the week and turn them into purpose. Fridays become a chance to create awareness, strengthen communities, and promote well-being. Companies, nonprofits, and individuals join forces and build a new rhythm.

Gamification for Lasting Change

Gamification makes this rhythm sustainable. Just as fitness trackers push us to move, Social Friday motivates us to act. Repetition builds belonging. Belonging builds resilience. And resilience is what society needs most today.

The Ecosystem Ahead

The vision goes beyond one day. The true goal is to build an ecosystem. An ecosystem where nonprofits are seen as providers of mental fitness. Where companies invest in well-being through connection. Where individuals feel part of something bigger each week. Where society values togetherness as highly as productivity.

What Comes Next

This is only the beginning. The one question—How can doing good become a habit?—remains our spark. It inspires new frontiers in fashion, gamification, music, reality TV, and schools. Each project strengthens the ecosystem and opens doors to possibilities we once thought impossible.

A Declaration and an Invitation

Social Friday is more than an initiative. It is a declaration: connection matters, mental health matters, and doing good must become a lifestyle. My invitation is clear. Join us. Reinvent Fridays. Not as an ending to the week, but as a beginning. A launchpad for belonging, purpose, and impact. Together we can build an ecosystem where doing good is not extra. It is who we are.
